It’s that time of year again…

2018 is coming to close and the weather is heating up! But unfortunately, summer doesn’t just mean beach days and BBQs. With the pool pump cranked and the AC on, rising temperatures can also hit pretty hard when it comes to energy bills.

We’ve put together our top list of all the ways you can cut costs by this sunny season, reducing your energy and your bills! In 2019, resolve to try one or more of these tips to and start seeing savings.

Use your ceiling fans.

Got ceiling fans? Hot tip! Fans pull the area around them to create the opposite temperature. So set your fans to spin counter-clockwise this summer and clockwise in the winter months!

Washing up

The plethora of family and friends that Christmas brings can often mean more dishes and laundry! Most of the energy used by dishwashers and washing machines goes toward heating the water, and washing only half loads of dishes or laundry wastes money. So wait until you have a full load of dishes or clothes before you wash them, and try a cold wash every once in awhile!

Close the blinds

Natural sunlight can help you stay warm in the winter, but in the summer it sure doesn't help cool your house down! Pull those curtains across and blinds down to keep your house cool and shady.

Summer of Solar

If you've got solar, make sure you're maximising it over summer by not letting all this sunny weather go to waste! carbonTRACK provides full visibility of the solar power you generate and consume. So you can see how much energy your solar panels are producing, how much you’re using and how much you’re sending back to the grid. Check the carbonTRACK app to see if you’re producing more than you’re using, so you can make the most of it by switching on one of your connected appliances or, if you have solar batteries, save it to use later.

carbonTRACK's intelligent engine can help you run connected devices during the day to make the most of your solar generation. Or if you're looking to make the most of time of use billing, you don't have to manually switch devices, you can simply automate them through carbonTRACK! You can set timers for those electricity-hungry appliances to run during daylight hours such as washing machines, hot water systems, circuit level appliances, pool pumps, pond and spa pumps.

carbonTRACK works with every PV solar system, and goes the extra mile by alerting you if something’s up. So you can relax knowing that your solar system is working at its best for you at all times and catching every ray of sunshine. You’ll never waste another kilowatt!

Every degree makes a difference!

Even one degree extra in summer can add approximately 10% to the amount of electricity your air conditioner uses. That can add up pretty quickly! With a carbonTRACK's Climate Command, you can quickly and easily adjust the temperature of your heating or cooling system remotely with your phone.

Watch out for standby power

The typical Aussie home has about 30 devices that constantly draw standby power, accounting for around 10% of a home’s energy bill. So if you’re not using an appliance, confirm that’s its completely turned off. You can run around the house checking powerpoints, or you can check your connected appliances via the carbonTRACK app and switch them off without getting up from the dinner table!

Schedule your aircon

carbonTRACK's scheduling feature is a handy tool when it comes to combating the change in seasons. By programming your aircon to come on a particular time, you can schedule your home's exact temperature and when this system is triggered to start and stop. You’ll be more comfortable and you’ll certainly notice the difference on your electricity bill. With the carbonTRACK app, you can even turn the air con on from the office or supermarket - so the house is cool before you even walk in the door!

Install energy saving light bulbs

Energy saving bulbs are called that for a reason. They can really help you save, especially when you think long term. Plus they last much longer than regular bulbs!

Set up your home electronics with Smart Plugs

Got some new electronics from Christmas? Looking forward to getting your television, cable box, DVD player, sound system, and video game console set up? When you do it, set things up with a Smart Plug you to can track how much standby power they are using and switch them off from your phone, from anywhere.

Energy efficient appliances

Buying new appliances in the new year? Consider investigating some energy efficient models with significantly lower running costs. While there may be more of an upfront cost, think of it as an investment, drastically reduce your energy bills overtime. So make the most of those Boxing Day sales and you'll be surprised by how much you can save on your energy bills by replacing that ancient fridge or air conditioner.

Not sure how efficient your current appliances are? Plug them into a Smart Plug and check the carbonTRACK app to find out exactly how much energy individual appliances are using.

Use more electricity when rates are low

Time of Use (TOU) billing is usually set up so that rates are higher when you’re more likely to be consuming electricity. For residences, this usually means late afternoon, while for businesses it might be more like 9am to 5pm.

You can save money by using the carbonTRACK app to schedule appliances and devices when electricity is cheaper – i.e. during the off-peak times (when electricity is at its cheapest – usually overnight) and shoulder times (when electricity rates are in between – usually occurring just before and after peak times).

Pool Pump

If you're lucky enough to be spending the summer by your pool, you'll know that a pool pump can chew through a whole heap of electricity! With carbonTRACK, you can schedule your pool pump to come on when electricity is cheapest, and confirm it's off when it's supposed to be.

Power down at close time

With carbonTRACK, homes and businesses can schedule lights, air-con and even power outlets to turn off at a certain time each day. This way, no electricity is being wasted overnight. So if your business closes over the Christmas break, use carbonTRACK to be sure everything is switched off - so you're not churning through energy (and dollars!) while you're sitting by the beach!

Optimise your holiday home

For those lucky people with holiday homes, this is the best time of year to make the most of them. Use carbonTRACK to turn on your air con, hot water system and lights on your way there, so the house is cool and ready as soon as you arrive! Then, once you’re headed back home, check everything is switched back off again via the app.

Know what energy you’re actually using

It's impossible to save what you can't see.

Use carbonTRACK to get a solid understanding of what is using electricity in your home and when. You'll know what you're using, when you're using it, anytime, anywhere.

Now that you’re armed with our tips, you’ll be well on your way to changing your energy habits and getting your bills under control in 2019!
