We need a resilient, responsive, and adaptive grid

The current centralized energy grid has kept the lights on for over 100 years. But it needs to be upgraded to become more resilient, responsive and adaptive to the rapidly evolving energy industry.


The problem with the traditional grid

We are experiencing more & more unprecedented weather events. These events are resulting in grid outages. Grid outages affect communities, people are left powerless until the grid is back up and running. This highlights the need for communities and buildings to become self-sufficient, energy islands.

The recent fires in California- USA and across eastern Australia, disconnected communities from the grid for weeks. Some residents and businesses had solar and battery systems but were unable to use them as these were grid-tied systems. Others that had off-grid systems were unable to control or access data from their systems because telco towers also went down. As the energy industry becomes decentralized, because of the uptake of renewables, there needs to be some intelligence around how systems respond during grid outages.

We need to modernize, not replace 

By retrofitting energy management (EMS) technology, such as carbonTRACK, to existing grid infrastructure we can build an ‘Adaptive Grid’. This will enable communities to become more resilient, energy islands, in times of a crisis. Communities connected to an Adaptive Grid can create microgrids, to generate, store, manage, and share energy locally.

An Adaptive Grid balances out grid fluctuations and avoids overloading with mandated load-shifting protocols. When the maximum load is reached, the adaptive grid automatically redirects energy, stores it, or curtails it at the source.
